Northern Circuit Route Map

Northern Circuit Considerations
Longest Route = The Best Acclimatization
📍 Total Duration: 8-9 Days
📈 Highest Summit Success Rate
⚠️ Minimizes the risk of altitude sickness
The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s longest trekking route, taking 8-9 days to complete. The gradual ascent allows for optimal acclimatization, significantly increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft) while minimizing altitude sickness risks.
🔹 Perfect for: Trekkers who want the best acclimatization profile and a relaxed, steady pace.
🔹 Think twice if: You prefer a shorter trek with a faster ascent.
Only Route That Circles Kilimanjaro
🏔️ A full 360-degree journey around Africa’s highest mountain
Unlike any other route, the Northern Circuit completely circles Kilimanjaro, giving trekkers an unrivaled, all-encompassing view of the mountain.
You’ll hike through five distinct ecological zones, each offering unique beauty and challenges:
🌳 Rainforest – Home to colobus monkeys and exotic birds
🌾 Moorlands – Featuring Kilimanjaro’s iconic Dendrosenecio trees
🏜️ Alpine desert – A Mars-like landscape of volcanic rock
🧊 Glacial zones – Stunning ice fields just below the summit
🔹 Perfect for: Trekkers who want a complete Kilimanjaro experience.
🔹 What to Expect: A route that truly lets you see every side of the mountain.

Least Crowded Route
🚶 Follows the Lemosho Route before splitting north
🚶 Avoids the heavily trafficked Machame & Marangu trails
🚶 Features peaceful, scenic campsites with fewer trekkers
If you prefer peace and quiet over crowded trails, the Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s most secluded route. For the first several days, you’ll rarely see other trekkers, making it feel like a true expedition through untouched wilderness.
🔹 Perfect for: Those who want an intimate, off-the-beaten-path adventure.
🔹 What to Expect: Very few hikers—until the final push to the summit.
Safest Route with the Best Success Rate
📈 Slow and steady altitude gain = Less altitude sickness
⏳ Extended itinerary = Better acclimatization
🚶 Gradual ascent profile = Easier on the body
The Northern Circuit isn’t just about scenery—it’s also the safest way to climb Kilimanjaro. The longer itinerary allows your body to adjust properly, reducing altitude sickness and increasing comfort throughout the trek.
🔹 Perfect for: Those who want to maximize their chances of reaching the summit.
🔹 What to Expect: A longer trek, but a smoother, safer journey to the top.
Summit Night & Mweka Descent
🚀 Midnight summit push from Kibo Hut
🌄 Reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise for the ultimate reward
⏬ Descend via the Mweka Route
After circling the mountain, you’ll join the Rongai Route at Kibo Hut for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The summit push begins at midnight, leading to an unforgettable sunrise at the top of Africa.
On the way down, the Mweka Route provides a direct descent, allowing for a quicker recovery and fresh scenery.
🔹 Perfect for: Those who want a scenic, immersive climb with a fast descent.
🔹 What to Expect: An epic summit night, followed by a rewarding, scenic trek down.

DAY 1 - Arrival in Tanzania
When you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport, a friendly GO2KILI rep will be waiting with a smile (and probably a Swahili greeting or two). The drive to your hotel in Arusha takes about an hour—plenty of time to unwind and soak in your first views of Tanzania.
Once you’re settled, we’ll schedule your pre-trek briefing. Your guide will walk you through the gear check and share a full rundown of your route, so you know exactly what to expect when the climb begins.

Your climb begins with a final briefing at the hotel, followed by a 2.5–3-hour drive to Lemosho Gate, where your permits are finalized. After enjoying lunch at the trailhead, you’ll step into Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest, where towering trees, hanging vines, and the sounds of wildlife create an enchanting atmosphere. The path winds through dense vegetation, gradually ascending toward Mti Mkubwa Camp, your first overnight stop.

A short descent brings you to Shira 1 Camp, your next overnight stay.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Pofu Camp, where the landscape is barren but strikingly beautiful.

DAY 7 - Pofu Camp → Third Cave Camp
A shorter trekking day allows for additional acclimatization as you continue along the northern circuit, intersecting with the traditional Rongai Route. You’ll settle in for the night at 3rd Cave Camp, where the temperature begins to drop significantly.

Upon arrival at School Hut, you’ll eat an early dinner and rest, preparing for the ultimate challenge ahead.

After hours of determined climbing, you’ll reach Stella Point (5,745 m / 18,900 ft) in time for an unforgettable sunrise over Africa. From there, the final push takes you to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft)—the highest point on the continent!
