Daily Routines On Kilimanjaro and What To Expect On Your Hike

Understanding the daily routines is crucial for a successful ascent. This article delves into what climbers can expect each day on Kilimanjaro, ensuring they are well-prepared for the journey ahead.


Morning Routine

  • Wake-Up Call: Around 6 AM, climbers are gently awakened by the camp staff. A basin of warm water is provided for washing up, along with a hot beverage to start the day.

  • Breakfast: A hearty breakfast is served in the mess tent following the morning wake-up routine. This is also the time for daily medical checks and a briefing about the day's hike.

  • Packing Up: Climbers repack their duffel bags and daypacks, ensuring only essential items for the day's hike are included. Sleeping bags are rolled up, and tents are prepared for departure.


Starting the Day's Hike

  • Departure: The hike typically begins around 8 AM, with guides ensuring a slow-to-moderate pace for acclimatization.

  • Breaks and Hydration: Frequent rest stops are made for catching breath, hydrating, and enjoying the scenery.

  • Guide Interaction: Guides maintain group cohesion and monitor climbers for altitude sickness symptoms.


Lunch Break

  • Midday Rest: A lunch break is taken at a scenic spot around midday, providing time to refuel and relax.

  • Meal Options: Lunch may be a hot meal in a mess tent or lunch table, depending on the day's conditions and schedule.

Afternoon Hike

Evening Routine

  • Arrival at Camp: Tents are set up and ready for the climbers. Changing out of damp clothing is advised for comfort.

  • Dinner: A nutritious dinner is served around 6:30 PM, allowing climbers to socialize and unwind.

  • Evening Activities: Optional activities like stargazing or briefings on Kilimanjaro's history may be available.

  • Descent: After a short rest at the summit, climbers descend back to base camp.
