Scaling Mount Kilimanjaro is a feat that challenges not just the body but also the mind. The bathroom facilities are among the less talked about yet crucial aspects of this adventure. Understanding what to expect regarding toilets is essential for climbers, not just for comfort but also for maintaining environmental responsibility at Africa's highest peak.

Types of Toilets on Kilimanjaro

  • Public Long Drop Toilets: Often found at campsites, budget tour operators and mountain crews commonly use these basic structures. Characterized by their simplicity, these long drops may not be as clean as private options and can emit unpleasant odors.

  • Private Toilets: Luxury and mid-range tour operators usually provide chemical toilets within private tents. These are more hygienic and offer a significantly more pleasant experience. Equipped with seats and housed within tents, they offer privacy and cleanliness.

  • Comparison: The main differences between public and private toilets lie in their cleanliness, privacy, and overall convenience. Although potentially costing more, private toilets provide a much more agreeable solution to nature's calls.

Private Toilet Tents

  • Features: Tour operators like Go2Kili provide private toilet tents, which include portable chemical toilets. These setups offer a secluded and sanitary space for personal use.

  • Maintenance: Assigned porters regularly service these toilets, ensuring they remain clean and odor-free throughout the journey.

  • Personal Tents: Private toilet tents can be arranged for an additional fee for those desiring exclusive facilities. This option provides the utmost privacy and convenience but comes at a higher cost.

Managing Bathroom Needs While Hiking

  • For Women: Devices such as the Shewee can be life savers, allowing women to urinate while standing, which is especially handy in the bush. Additionally, using pee cloths over toilet paper is recommended for environmental reasons.

  • Defecating While Hiking: While it's best to utilize the camp toilets in the morning, sometimes nature calls unexpectedly during a hike. In such cases, climbers should be prepared with a trowel, provided by the guides, to bury waste and biodegradable bags for used toilet paper, adhering to Leave No Trace principles.

Nighttime Bathroom Visits

  • Challenges: Navigating Kilimanjaro's cold and dark conditions at night for bathroom trips can be daunting.

  • Tips: To minimize these trips, climbers should limit fluid intake before bedtime and make a final bathroom visit just before getting into their sleeping bags. Carrying a flashlight is essential for safety during these nocturnal excursions. And be sure to take your time getting up; you will have shortness of breath at higher elevations.

We encourage climbers to discuss Kilimanjaro toilet arrangements with their tour operators and choose options that align with their comfort and environmental consciousness. Remember, a well-prepared climber is one step closer to a successful and enjoyable ascent of Kilimanjaro.
